It is only about Heavy Metal singers with best Voices.
We don't consider pop rock or hard rock bands like
Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, .... AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and so on.

Warning
The list contains formidable names.

Let me stress that I mean singing and not
just screaming, shouting, using special effects etc.
They all scream (at times) etc. but some of them can actually sing!
Also, this poll is about the best Voice of All Time, i.e. since 1970.

Enjoy the poll, your drink

Some notable mentions...

Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Michael Kiske, Rob Halford,Matt Barlow, Geoff Tate, Andre Matos... Halford on the old albums wins by a long shot, most amazing male voice ever...but it didn't last forever, Dio instead managed to keep a great power even at 60...that's probably because he has a perfect technique and doesn't strain his vocal cords too much... too bad Kiske went out of the metal scene long ago...he was up there with Halford and Tate in the high registry

Those are just "clean" vocalist ...for other genres it is another sory...

X2,I might be biased because i hat pantera, as the kickstarters of the whole 'core scene...needless to say i hate their vocal style...however given those choiches...my vote goes for The metal god...sad Rob changed his style over time...his performance on Sad Wings Of Destiny is unmatched...

Tool - prog metal.
Anselmo is obviously a heavy metal singer.
Queensryche -prog metal.

There will be some ambiguities regarding heavy metal vs. hard rock.
For instance some people consider Led Zeppelin a Heavy Metal band (Sic!).

Devin Townsend

Really, there simply isn't anyone in Metal with greater range and ability than Devin.

Want proof?

Check out these songs:

The Devin Townsend Band - Storm
The Devin Townsend Band - Vampira
Devin Townsend - Bad Devil
Devin Townsend - Earth Day
Ocean Machine - person
Strapping Young Lad - All Hail the New Flesh

Really, this isn't even a contest.

to see whether Dio, Dickinson, Halford, Tate or Cornell will win the poll. -
Most probably Dio - for many his name is synonymous with a Heavy Metal singer.

Also, quite a few votes for 'None of the above' does not mean that
this option is the winner.
Simply, because most probably, those votes for 'None of the above'
are for various singers and not just one.

Obviously we would need more poll options but only 10 are available.

that is where we differ and will differ.

For instance, some consider AC/DC and Led Zeppelin heavy metal bands.

The only people who consider AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to be heavy metal are the ones who have no idea what is metal. Just because you have some elements of metal doesn't make you a metal band. These bands are certainly NOT metal:

Soundgarden: they are grunge, duh
Tool, A Perfect Circle: Both are progressive rock
Scorpions: they have some metal influences, but are mainly a hard rock band

And how could you nominate Anselmo? He's more suitable for the race as worst metal vocalist ever.

In any case the best heavy metal vocalist for clean vocals would either be Sir Russell Allen (Symphony X) or Midnight (Crimson Glory). For harsh it would either be Chalky (Psycroptic), Julien Truchan (Benighted) or Paul Kuhr (Subterranean Masquerade).

Agreed. Merciful Fate had great metal vocals.

The list is too narrow and hand-picked for me. And why isn't AC/DC metal? Next you'll say Sabbath wasn't metal either. The ****ing bands today owe their souls – not to the devil – but to the pioneers that created this genre. I love Soundgarden, but are they really more metal than AC/DC?
