Who goes through the trouble of using a compressor for car audio? (pre-computed into mp3s)

Am I the only one considering this and/or is that a mad idea?

I listen to my mp3s under high noise levels. Open convertible, in Boston with all the honking and crashes around, passing V8s etc. I am seriously annoyed that quiet passages in music aren't coming through depending on where I'm currently driving.

I consider making a second version of all my mp3s that are run through a compressor (after a base leveling and possibly other effects).

Any opinions on this? Anybody else doing it?

I did a similar mp3 mixing a while back to "optimize" two twelves fed 2000 watts in the back of my brothers truck. I simple went through in soundforge and took the treble and mids down and upped the bass about 100% then took a listen until I had the proper balance so on the cds you didn thave to touch to volume knob, and didnt have horrible sibilance, also more bass.
Its an interesting idea, give it a try on one cd and see how you like it.
