I think Robert Fripp is an underrated guitarist, despite being technically proficient and having a huge influence on music, guitarists, and musicians in general. Maybe it has something to do with his reclusive nature, until he hooked up with his wife, Toyah Wilcox.
Who do you think doesn't get the attention they're due?
Joe Pass... and NHOP (bass though... i'm sure he'd do that on bass guitar too)
Oh, and Django Reinhardt - considering he could only use 3 fingers, dude has more dexterity and talent than I will ever have on all 10 fingers! I mean check out at time 2:50
Robert Fripp may not get talked about a lot now but he is actually known as a guitar god for two generations. First obviously with King Crimson, then as the duo with Brian Eno on “No *****footing” released November 1973. Fripp then became known all over again to a new generation with the hugely popular reforming of King Crimson from 1981-1984.
One of the most talked about guitarists, though maybe not so popular now?
Michael Schenker is widely considered the greatest guitar player to ever live. The 1979 live UFO album “Strangers In The Night” was a huge commercial success. Though maybe his “Michael Schenker Group” currently is not that famous?
I don't think the Father of heavy guitar riffs gets that much attention these days. Maybe he did in the past, but not too much nowadays. Tony Iommi is perhaps one of the most influential and creative guitarists in metal as well as all of rock, and is a guy that immediately comes to mind, if we're wondering just who really were the founding fathers of the metal sound, and Tony was definitely one of them, even helping in the creation of metal itself, as a musical genre.
Here he is with Glen Hughes, kicking some serious ass on their release, Fused (Full Album)
Probably Dick Dale would be the most underrated guitar player in modern times. IMO
Just the fact that he with Leo Fender created the first loud guitar with the Fender Showman Amplifier. The fact Dale personally showed Hendrix how to join two or more amplifiers on stage, thus creating what we know today as rock/metal guitar. I’m very happy to have talked with him on the phone a couple years ago. He with Leo Fender helped introduce the Stratocaster Guitar as well as the Fender Rhodes Piano. The video also explains how he introduced the 15 inch woofer, aluminum cone and introduced the guitar speaker surround technology. It’s hard to say what his career would have been without the statutorily rape convictions and jail time. Though having his song being chosen by Tarantino for the opening of Pulp Fiction was a big boost to his comeback.
