Which version of the ID3 do you use?

Definitely V2.3. It's the most widely supported by players of all kinds and much more flexible than V1. foobar uses V2.4 by default which caused me a bit of trouble for a while!

Although foobar2000 recognises and reads 2.4, WMP and my Creative Zen couldn't retrieve the tags. I believe this is the case with most popular products/apps (Explorer too IIRC).

id3v1 & id3v2.3 with UTF-16 encoding on all my tracks.

id3v2.4 because foobar2000 writes that natively.

My Sony NWZ-A818 doesn't read those though, so I also write id3v1 tags for the Sony.

I wish there was a baseline for these things. Its doing my head in, the way each manager does things slightly differently, and each player has its own twist to tags.

I use 2.4 with foobar, and rockbox recognizes them fine. But with the sony mp3 player, which recognizes 2.3, I may have to change foobar to write in 2.3 instead of 2.4.

I do not use v1 because they don't support unicode. I don't think they do.

I guess use whatever that's support by your audio player.

Like 2.3 works on player A, but not on player B.
And 2.4 works on player B, but not player A?

I was actually talking about tags in general not a specific version. Some of mine work in MediaMonkey but not in iTunes. I thought I had converted them to 2.4 but I think I've got some file corruption going on so that might be the cause of the problem. Now I realise I need 2.3 for my Sony. So I might just restore my library from a backup and go from there.

I use id3v2.3 ansi

I delete all id3v1.

Works perfect in my cowon's that way.

It also works perfect in my Sony 616 and sansa clip that way.
