which thickness should be used?

For what? Signal? Power?

I use 30ga wire for signal, no problems. Power I use the thickest stuff I can fit through the holes.

If you're not using stranded wire, consider using that instead, because it will be easier to bend. Also, consider using Teflon or irradiated PVC insulated wire as the insulation can be thinner with these types, giving the same thickness for the wire itself but a thinner overall aspect.

If you look around online, you can find measures for ohms per unit length of wire, which may also be interesting to you. Putting 4 ohms in series with a signal can be significant.

I use 20 and 22 gauge stranded wire.
