I was looking at Ultrasones and I'm not quite sure what the difference is between these, and which one is best for me.

These are the ones I'm looking at.

DJ1
DJ1 Pro
HFI-580
Pro 550

I know that the Pro models have a detachable cord and a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, But I was mostly curious about the difference in sound quality.

First and foremost, I don't have an amp, so they have to sound good without it. However, these wont be portable headphones, so they will most likely never be powered by anything less than a PC or an AV receiver.

Second, Comfort. What the point of a great sounding headphone if you can't keep it on your head. By the way, I have a big head.

Finally, bass. Although I am looking for bassy headphones (which I've heard that these are) I want to make sure that the bass is pleasant. Quality is just as important as quantity.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

i have the dj1 (for sale too lol-i have way too many cans)
they have tons of bass- run well off of an xfi sound card. pretty comfortable- as bout as good as it gets for a pleather pad(not as good as velour, velvet, etc)

the bass is slightly stronger than a dt770 and is pronounced as a slightly higher frequency. more midrange than a dt770. the headband opens up a lot- so your big head is safe! they feel quality made and durable. the sound is 'closer' to your head. i guess u would call these a smaller soundstage than the dt770 but still much bigger than a grado sr80
hope this helps
i havent burned these in yet so sound may change.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to here that the bass was stronger than the DT770s. I've never heard them, but I've heard the stories.

It sounds like the 500 series are a lot more bassy, which is sort of what I'm looking for.

you know... i can't really consider the dj1's bassy phones. i own a pair of dj1's and a pair of proline 750's, and the 750's dismantle the bass response of the dj1's. now, with that said...

if you put 750 pads on the dj1's... WOW do they turn into some bass monsters!

ps: you can do the pad switch with the dj1 pro's. the treble takes a hit, but that bass is incredible! i think i'm going to buy some extra 750 pads and dye them black to use on my dj1's for gigs...

thanks for the info e-dub. Do the DJ1s need an amp?

well, ever since i got my amp and saw the night and day difference it made... it's hard for me to say that any headphone doesn't need an amp lol. i'm sure you can get away with not using one, but me personally, i'd amp them.

I'd love to get an amp, but they're just so darn expensive. I can't justify doubling the price of my headphones to buy an amp.

well, i've heard the dj1's personally, of all the phones on this list. i really don't know how the 550's differ from the deejay phones, but if you can get the proline of either the 550 or the dj1, the amount of bass you can get from the switch to the more comfortable pads of the 750s is really something else!

edit - don't forget to CALL northen sound and light for the best price: 866-796-6232
