M50 is a v-shaped headphone with bass and treble emphasis and recessed mids. K550 is more balanced and a big soundstage..

I just got the NAD HP50 yesterday. Go for them. Better headphone :)

Just note that "dark (black) background" depends on what it's hooked up to. If a headphone has too high sensitivity and the amplifier or phone or whatever has low (SNR) signal to noise ratio, then your background won't be as "dark." A black background means there's absolutely no hint of hiss, even without music playing, and so the sound is clearer and it's easier to perceive dynamic range in the louder notes.

If a headphone has anything to do with it, just avoid one with too high sensitivity; on the other hand, if your headphone has too low sensitivity, then you'll have to use more power, which ups the distortion levels on the amplifier driving it (or the audio chip on a smartphone). You have to strike a good balance, especially if you're not using a good amplifier.

ProtegeManiac: thanks for your clarifying and input. I am horrible with technical terms :)

Here's a good place to read up on that: http://www.head-fi.org/a/glossary-of-terms
