Get both then... Or I would suggest get the cheaper Pro 900 and do some KeeS modding and the HD 800

.

Edition 8 is out as well and Grado have some very expensive headphones to burn money on as well.

Be careful, you might actually burn it (Buying the wrong gear) as a waste. Could we possibly know how much is that spare cash you've got on you?

Bass head, then the Ed9
Audiophile (balanced, detailed, extended, dynamic, airy, etc), then the HD800

I could of course have said 'invest in love, spend it on your loved ones', but that's not so much the head-fi tradition.
On head-fi a sensible investment advice will be more like 'remember: Crap in, crap out'.

If you don't want to upgrade your source and amp I'd say go for the more sensitive Edition 9, or maybe the more portable Edition 8 that has a 4 foot 1/8" cable and a 12 (or 8?) foot extension cable with 1/4" connector. That way you can use it with your ipod+ibasso with ease. I like open headphones more than closed headphones, but I wonder if your current source/amp will have good synergy with the HD800.

You haven't mentioned what kind of music you like most. One headphone can't rule them all. Despite all the HD800 airy, transient, soundstage, speed, smoothness and a load more of them, I can't imagine HD800 is cool for hip-hop and watching movies, but maybe Ed9 will. Like this ...

And remember, you also still need to buy a cool headphone amp that match with your headphone preference, you can't just plug-in HD800 to your laptop, for example. So if you don't plan properly, this hobby can suck your spare cash very fast, just like black hole

very very fast.

So? enjoy, a lot of good folks here that guide you through your selections and preference

all you need is ask, and a little bit of searching.
