UM2s sound great out of an iPod. Amp not needed. You would have to look for a used set to fit your budget though.

I got my UM1's from earphonesolutions, and I strongly recommend them to you.
Unlike headphone.com, you can select international mail for shipping, which means it's very unlikely you'll have to pay any taxes (I didn't). Check this info.

Yeah, they are very popular here in Germany, too. They are told to be extremely comfortable...
