Hey guys so I got directed to these forums by a moderator from another forum (PCPP), I'm looking at buying a new set of headphones as the ones I have now are just plain bad. I've found three that seem to be well recommended and in my price range;

AKG Q 701 - http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Quincy-Signature-Reference-Class-Headphones/dp/B004444O46/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323825066&sr=8-1

Audio Technica ATH-AD900 - http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD900-Dynamic-Headphones/dp/B001AQ7KII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323825164&sr=8-1

Beyerdynamic DT 990 - http://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-990-Premium-32-Headphones/dp/B0024NK344/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323833195&sr=1-6

I plan on just buying a Fiio E7 to power them for now then also buying a E9 later to go along with it (or if anyone can suggest a better option to power these). Which set would be best to buy? I listen to a whole range of different music like, electronic, dubstep, indie, rock, hip hop. Any suggestions? (I'm leaning greatly towards the Q 701's)

The music you like is pretty bass-driven, but the Q701 isn't known to be a bassy headphone. Why are you considering it?

Beyer 990 is bassy and trebly, so be sure that's what you want. Also note that there are Pro and Premium variants, and within each variant line there are 32, 250 and 600 ohm versions. You'll want to research the differences of those.

Heya,

Q701 - Neutral, big sound stage. Needs more power from an amplifier (ie, the E7 won't do).
AD900 - Neutral, big sound stage. Will power off nearly anything (ie, E7 will do).
DT990 - Bassy, big sound stage. Power needs depend on model and resistance you select (32ohm to 600ohm, the E7 will do ok with the 32ohm and 250ohm but you're best with more power).

Very best,

The Q701 may not have an overload of bass, but it still sounds great with EDM + hip hop, IMO. I would not say I would be opposed to them having just a touch more bass. Fantastic regardless. Will have DT990 600ohm headphones here tomorrow to compare them with. :)

Eh sorry, I realised that after I posted how it seemed my music is all bassy. Some is, most isn't. I mostly listen to indie music, which if you've heard is mid/treble. Stuff like Ball Park Music, San Cisco, Portugal the Man. Stuff people probably haven't heard of :p

I'm not a real bassy person, too much bass for me is horrible, hence why I'm looking at the Q 701's.

What would be a more suitable amp for the Q 701's? either portable or desktop. looking at price range of around 200

NFB-12, $200.

When it comes to the X70X's, you want a powerful desktop amp. Portable doesn't cut it for that headphone, if you want to hear them at full potential. Get IEM's or something easily driven if you want portable (something like SRH940).

Very best,
