ATH-R70x is very different to the K712, it's super reference compared to it and barely has any soundstage at all so I wouldn't really call it an enjoyment headphone, nice sidegrades to the K712 are the HD 6XX/Sundara/DT 1990.
I have to strongly disagree that the ATH-R70x "barely has any soundstage." Its soundstage improves with an amp -- it's 470 ohms -- but even straight out of the Macbook there is plenty of space. I have read that AKG's are renowned for soundstage, so it may not be at the level of a $650 headphone, but "barely any" does not make sense to me.

As for "super reference" and not enjoyable? It just sits back and lets the music through without blatant coloring, and it's ultra-light and barely-there comfortable. I find that very enjoyable -- so much so that it has just about replaced my other headphones and IEMs for all-day listening.

Crinacle's graph suggests it has a little more vocals/guitar presence than the K712, which is fine with me.

There's an open-box pair up on Ebay right now that nobody bid on at $199 and just got relisted. (I was watching out of curiosity, no connection.) That's a steal.

I have both R70x and K712.
Listening music is more pleasant with R70x due to more bass with less accentuated mids.
Working with sound, K712 here is the chief due to full natural sound range, however R70x is its indispensable assistant, so it is advisable in my opinion to have both pairs.
