you won't regret it

The ety 4P will get you the best sound on the go, but they were brutally painful to wear since they go into your ear canal.

It's all a matter of getting used to them. Wear them for a while and you won't even know they're in your ear. I hated mine for the first week or so until I realized that I was putting them in too far and it was causing me pain when I put a helmet on. Now it's all good. I tried wearing my helmet that I modifeid with PX200's in it and I made it around the block before I went home to get my Ety's. They rock.

There's activity and there's portability. I like the E3c/E5/ER-4P (all of which I have) for portable use. However I would not really consider them for active use.

Running and cycling are totally different activities to biking for example. I would discount any recommendations based on one activity for the other. I've not run for a long time (except for the train or bus) but I used to be an avid cyclist and biker. It also depends really on how active the use is going to be. The PXC250's are already fairly portable in themselves for commuting and what have you.

In-gym activity? Well that's fine... even on the treadmill isolation is a plus in many situations. But actually being active out there in the real world does not favour super isolating canalphones.

Also, the PX100 sounds rather different to the PX200. Experience of one does not mean you've heard both. The poster already has a PXC250 which offers excellent cancellation with reasonable isolation, and the PX100 or KSC-35 would be a good sonic compliment for active use.

On the other hand, upgrading the PXC250? I'd recommend the E5

Well I went around to some different stores today, could not fine Senn mx400/500 anywhere, so many PX100's, can't find any Koss, and almost picked up a set of black Sony EX71's. I was sitting there in the store holding the EX71's and Senn PX100's trying to decide on which I want. If they had the EX71 in white, I would have been sold!!! But then again I don't think I will like how the EX71's will sound.

So I rethought it, and I think I want to just order my gear online.

If I already had known before I would have gotten the Ety 4p, but I have already bought my Senn PXC250 noise cancellation headphones back in November last year. I like these headphones sooo much that I want other phones that will sound as good.

So now I am thinking of getting the Senn MX400 (don't care much for volume control since my iPod already has a wired remote) for working out, cycling, walking around; Grado SR60's for hangin out at coffee shops, studying/ reading when I dont care too much about outside noise, chillin at home, to match my vintage clothing while walking... LOL ;and then sticking with my Senn PXC250's when I am studying in really noisy places, or when I just want to be isolated, airtravel.

So what do you think?

I think you don't need our advise. Yours is the best I've read so far.

Anyone know of anyplaces where I can purchase both the Senn MX400 and Grado SR60's at the same time? Preferably a store in Southern California that I can walk in to... but I dont mind getting it through the internet as long as they are cheap and fast.

There must be a lot of physical acoustics going on with earbuds. I tried the RS pad mod on my MX500 and thought the treble became severely attenuated. Glad it worked for you!

if you want to pretend you never found this place, but still make a mini-audiophile inspired choice, get the mx 400's. The mx 500's are an ugly color and come with an unnecessary inline volume control.

If you want to hear some of the most amazing music reproduction possible on the go with current technology, kiss your wallet good bye and get the shure e5c's.

Be aware that you can have fit issues with even the MX400... I've tried jogging with them and they literally just fall out after 5 minutes. Larger headphones or Etys are a lot better in that regard.

Fortunately MX400s are cheap enough that you're probably not going to care much one way or the other about it.

You can have an audioligist make you custom ear molds for the Ety's and they'll never fall out. I'd imagine you could do the same with the Shures.

Cycling is kinda dangerous... I mean, some guy in a car see's a guy with phones in his ears, and seems to not be able to hear anything... Doesn't that just make a great senario for a guy to run over a biker and claim it was an accident?

Ok, so we arn't that evil (no, really) but still, accidents happen. You would want to hear stuff coming at you before it hits you... (runnaway cars, bullets, little children)

EX71 isolates slightly, even with small cones... not to mention they slip out easily.

MX400/500 are good phones, but if your ears are too small, they are kinda big... not to mention, they just sorta, 'sit' there in your ear... Easy to fall out.

Koss KSC 35s are great phones, for outside, or inside. High fidelity for the cheapie person (me).

For my exercising, I use Koss KSC 22s. Crappie phones, but they are the lightest clip on phones I've ever tried... they are ear buds, but they barely even go into your ear.
You won't enjoy these if you don't enjoy your music a lot, but for practicality and function in an active area, these are nice.

Shure phones are great for the gym (unless it starts to burn down, and you can't hear anyone screaming fire)

Pardon my ignorance, but for those who are recommending the Senn MX400s/500s, aren't the stock iPod 'buds made by Sennheiser?

This might not be true of the older iPods, but I thought I read that the Mini comes with Senn 'buds.

Regardless, I'm not sure there will be an appreciable sonic difference between the stock iPod buds and the Senns. I own the 400s and think they're okay, but the difference between 'buds isn't going to be dramatic unless you go to Etys or Shures.
