There is no best headphone although there may be different classes. It all depends on preference.

sennheiser orpheus and sony r10 tend to be the ones that like to claim the title though. some say old school grado hp1000. not that i've ever even been in the same room with any of those headphones.

Sennheiser Orpheus is actual a headphone/amp combo, the Headphone in the sennheiser Orpheus the Sennheiser he90 is prob the best in the world( also cost the most lol $7,500 :-p). But the he90 is electrostatic , so if you are talking about dynamic headphones only it's prob going to be a tie with the Sony MDR-r10 and Joe Grado Hp-1 ( the hp-2 also ). The ATH L-3000 might be up there with the other two but no one really knows yet.

If your including electrostatic the the top 5 headphones are ( in no order ) Sennheiser he90 , Omega II , sony mdr-r10 , Grado Hp-1( and hp-2 ) , and maybe an ATH L-3000. No one can really say which is the "best" because each one sounds different and people feel differently about which one really is the best.

Also you should realize that just because these 5 are said to be the best doesn't mean your going to feel that way. I know some people feel that the Grado Rs-1 is better then the hp-1 , so it's very hard to say which is the best but if you did an avg of what people feel it would deff be the ones I've listed

. I personaly think the Sennheiser he90 is the best and then the sony mdr-r10 then the hp-1 then the omega II. But that is just me , I know there are people that like the omega II over the he90

A headphone alone doesn't produce music. It takes a source, amp, and cabling to do this. Add power conditioning if you want to get technical. The best headphone in the world is one which utilizes a synergistic combination of all these three to produce the best sound possible. By this I mean that the Son R10 won't sound very good if all you use is a Creek OBH-11 to power them. OTOH, a pair of Senn HD600s will outperform the Sonys if you put in a uber-source, cabling, and a really good amp.

Having said that, the headphones with the "potential" to be the best in the world are the Sony R10 for dynamics, and the Stax Omega II and Sennheiser HE90 for electrostatics. With the right amount of money put into a full system any of these three sets of cans you can achieve something truly sensational. If not it is a waste of money and time.

When you get to the top, the only different is the matter of taste.

However, ppl's taste are change from time to time. Just like, you really love Chinese food, but sometime you may want to try Japanses food, Italian food........

So the only solution is to become headphone collector.

Now everyone lookie here, I dont see why someone always has to post these kind of threads because they always end up as some sort of big argument over which is better.

When it gets up to the top-notch phones, it all comes down to preference and opinion.

So ill just let that sink in...

Sadly far too often people here tend to spend much too much money and attention to only the headphones, and at best the headphones/amp combo and that's it, only to be disappointed with the results.
