which has the best sound quality as an audio card for notebook?

I believe M-audio sells some fantastic External Firewire soundcards, you should check out there website.

Why not test the M-Audio stuff - the Audiophile USB, FireWire Solo - or the ESI Waveterminal? Either head over to a store that has them and bring a comp and some headphones, or order them online with a return policy.

I've only had experience with the Audiophile 2496 internal card, but I was impressed with the sound quality. Seemed a little overpriced, though.

Do you need an actual soundcard to do more than listen to music? If not, the Headroom MicroDAC @ $300 is the best quality for just music.

What's the sound quality compared with benchmark dac1?

Quality wise, the DAC1 maybe a little bit better but I don't like the DAC1's treble or bass as it doesn't seem very well integrated so I prefer the MicroDAC. When I speak of better I mean detail wise. The MicroDAC is also just less offensive which is a plus.

Would you care to elaborate on the differences between the two DACs? What amp did you use? Headphones? Bit-perfect out, upsampled, EQed? Few people, from what I can tell, have heard both, and I'm hoping to get a good comparison before I order. Have you heard any other DACs? How did they compare, if so?

If you do need capabilities 'over' 24/96 and if your price limit stays at 300$ then there is not many firewire cards to choose from.
