The only one I hadn't used much was the 2G. I agree with the comments about the 1G sounding different. Whether or not it sounds better is probably some matter of debate. I personally liked it better than the 3G, but the modern models offer considerably more convenience (size, speed, capacity, etc.).
I've found 3G full size not to reliably play lossless continuously on long tracks (>~8 minutes). It goes silent momentarily while reloading the buffer. You need 4G or newer in full size models if you want to play lossless.
They keep making them thinner. Its great. It makes it easier to fit my amp in my pocket too. The better sq and size makes me itch for a 5G...but I really want an M^3
