Hello,
I currently use the analog out of my emu, and I was wondering what DAC would yield an improvement over this setup. Also would I put it after the digital out of the emu or plug directly into the computer?

Not really, I usually buy at the price point of what i consider "diminishing returns".
At any rate I m looking for a substantial (ie that i could hear) improvement.

My CI Audio VDA-1 & VAC-1 combo is a nice upgrade, about $510 for the combo, $349 for the DAC alone. Definetly worthwhile.

the improvement is definitely sbstantial even only with cheap cables

That would be a very interesting combo to hear but VDA-1 isn't produced anymore and the new CIAudio DAC is much more expensive.
