Both are within my price budget, but being a nooby at this sort of stuff, which puts out overall better quality sound?

Sorry. I haven't heard them. But I've seen lots of people happy with each of them.

However, there's the new kid in town. The JBL LSR305. They have been getting rave user testimonials and reviews since they came out last fall, often considered comparable in quality to the best $500 studio monitors.

You have to have two speakers. Otherwise, you do not get a soundstage with imagine and instrument separation. Wouldn't sound as good as a cheaper pair of speakers. Plus, pretty much any audio device is designed to output right/left stereo, not mono in one channel.

I have the M Audio's. They have been great. Only can sound as good as your DAC. Subwoofer makes the sound twice as good. Thinking about adding a subwoofer later on.

Behringer products are generally pretty bad from my experience.
