I want to learn how to design different headphone amps, but from a couple quick google searches I couldnt find anything super helpful. Where would I go to learn how they are designed so I could make my own if I ever wanted to?

There are so many references it's difficult to cite only a few.

Here's a great magazine article by Pete Millett on the original Millett Hybrid:
http://diyforums.org/MiniMAX/history/ax_hybrid.pdf

It goes through many steps in the reasoning behind creating a simple tube-hybrid amplifier for headphones.

Another great link, although it's mostly about building, is Tangent's tutorial on building the CMoy:

Tangent has gobs of beginner information here, with the CMoy tutorial included:

Like most design engineering, there is very little documentation or tutorials on the creative process itself.  This is not really unique and exists throughout engineering.  You will find many engineers are great at analysis, but it takes something special to actually create a design.  Most get a start by reviewing numerous existing designs, learning how they work and building them, then making modifications and learning what changes what.  Eventually, with enough background and preferences built up, one gets enough confidence to create a design on their own.

Your question is analogous to cooking and recipes.  Many people can cook by following instructions and learning the basic techniques.  However, actually creating a recipe for a dish that's tasteful ... well, that's another leap altogether.

I hope that's not too discouraging.  Seems that some people have been accusing us of that lately.

I started with tangent's cmoy guide - once you've built one of those and started to understand some of the problems and potential areas for tweaking it kind of leads you into finding the other information which is spread around the internet.

If your interest is in solid state/op amp based then it is worth reading through NwAvGuy's O2 design process - I wouldn't necessarily take his word as gospel but he covers a lot of ground and you can make your own conclusions through testing or application.

I found this a useful resource early on when dealing with op amps

I have no background in this myself, even my basic electronics knowledge is patchy but there is a wealth of information on the internet you have to dive in really and see where it takes you.

EDIT: Some of the negativity and grumpiness in general with this subject saddens me as its something I took up as a hobby almost by accident - I don't take it too seriously and over the last couple of years had a lot of enjoyment from it.

If you're interested in tubes, this website is a godsend. It starts with the absolute basics, but it gets into the helpful stuff fast. Tubecad also has a lot of good articles, but they can be very confusing to a beginner (I know from personal experience)
