you can also go to J&R Music World across from City Hall in manhattan. They carry all the Senn buds. And go upstairs to laugh at their wall of sound and see the very sad senn cans up there.

No and no.

They couldn't be much more different. The 500's are warm, the 550's are bright. The 550's have no bass whatsoever, and are much more forward-sounding. I was really disappointed with the MX550; the more I listened, the more unpleasant they became.

I disagree, I enjoyed the sound of the MX550, even more as I continued to listen. They are bit more bright then the MX500's, but they are not night and day. I think that they are sold exclusively through circuit city.
