Before you return the the HA-1,you should really upgrade the preamp tube to a CIFTE from Upscaleaudio & the power tubes to Amperex's. It would make a huge difference. What tubes did you use finally?

Sumb, Thanks for your review! I've gone ahead an ordered the Headmaster from StoneAudio UK, and it should be here in about a week. I'm also tempted to order the EarMax Pro so I can do a side by side comparison with my Grado RS1's.

arrowmark I was using the stock tubes. If I ordered those tubes from Upscale they might not get here in time. There can be long delays at the border.

Update 10/10/01. The treble/bass distortions I mentioned above are not present in my new unit. The treble is no longer lagging behind on fast paced material. I can't pin the problem on the tubes or the (courtesy of UPS) trashed Earmax Pro as everything was in the box these idiots subsequently lost. Just FIY.
