What's your King of all <$500 Headphones?

Also for the HD650 lovers, and users, don't forget that while you choose the HD650 as "the king" you are talking of the "stock HD650", with an aftermarket upgraded cable (as many members use it, and I know that they are stating they preffer it that way) it will be far over 500.00, as it almost (if not) costs 500.00 alone from many of our sponsors stores.....

I'm just clarifying that, as I did not see the K-1000 in the poll, and IMO it must be there, as the difference between the K-1000, and the HD650 with an aftermarket cable, is not that much....

I paid $350 for a new pair of Grado RS-2's with the older flat pads on sale, shortly after the pads were changed to the newer bowl pads.
I have tried Sennheisers several times, but find them too finicky about amplification and could not get them sound anywhere near as good as the Grado RS-2's. With a $700 tube amp, the Senn's sound very good, but with anything less, the Grado's win.

"King of all" brings in versatility and practicality. If your statement was "king of all with only sound quality in mind" I might have voted for the DT880 or HD650. However, since you don't mention priority in the criterias, I would have to vote for one that is not on your list:

Audio Technica W1000

To my taste, sound quality is equal to the above two so if the sound signature is to your taste then they also add in the equation, good comfort, some isolation, extreme build quality, great classy look and finally very easy to drive even without a dedicated headphone amp...

OK, I can see some flames coming my way

I've owned most of thoese headphones, except the AKGs, Shure E4c, and Grado SR-325i. Here's my list;

1) Sennheiser HD-650
2) Sony MDR-CD3000
3) Sony MDR-SA5000
4) Senn HD-600, Beyer DT-880
5) Shure E5C, Etys ER-4s
6) Grado SR-225

I just know I'm going to have to try W1000 someday.

I think the 880s also have good comfort and good (maybe not extreme) build quality, but they aren't especially classy (except for the velour pads

) and they sure aren't easy to drive.

Since this poll is closed, at some point should be a good idea to create a new poll adding the K701. I still think its probably a little early, since not enough people might have had a chance to hear them for long enough to have a solid impression on them yet. Or what do you guys think? Another new entry should be the HF1.
