What's wrong with me?

I don't think there's a thing wrong with you. maybe someday you will hear some equipment that sends you into rapture, maybe not.

i think sometimes people get so caught up listening to equipment qualities that they forget why they came to the dance: the music.

i'm the type who tries to listen to as many pieces of gear as possible, takes his time buying, and then runs away fast and never looks back at the newer stuff until i am ready to upgrade again. i find it much easier to enjoy music that way than by being on a perpetual sonic quest.

I'm the same as you -- except I don't get the chance to listen to a lot of different gear, however, I do take my time deciding on what to buy, and then I forget about gear for the next 4 months, only to come back and buy some more later until I feel that I've reached the pinnacle of perfection.

if your gear is keeping you happy, and you cant see a reason to "upgrade" even though the "better" gear is "better" DONT!!!!!

my computer (by your standards) likely sucks. i built it, as a pretty basic web surfer &media ripper that would not get too hung up opening many firefox tabs in many windows

nothing fancy, i know better gear exists. i jsut dont NEED it. thus i have no desire to buy it.

have a similar feeling towards your headphones, unless YOU want better gear for YOU (or maybe your wife) dont buy it.

If you feel like this I think you should go back to some "entry level" headphones that you like; Grado SR60 or something like that. Then you use this until you get hungry for more. Your hearing will develop after a while.

The clue is that you want to learn more about headphones, hanging on a forum and writing this post. That is what makes a true headphone nerd. The interest, the passion.

When you start playing the violin, it is stupid to start with an expensive violin since you can't make use of it. Maybe it's the same situation for you with headphones?

As for the bitrate of mp3s, I haven't heard any difference from 160 kbps <. The compression is made so the human ear should'nt hear any difference. For AAC I use 128, since I can't hear the difference from 128 and up. When I hear the difference I will re-rip my library... Or something :-I

That's because there is no noticeable difference between them.
