We've found that the Panasonic SLSX 300 is better sounding and FAR
less expensive. We must admit, however that the 777 is better
sounding than the top of the line Sony's have been in the past few
years. Prior to this the last time the high end Sony was good
sounding was the 308 and 555 about 5 years ago.

Got my D777 not long ago. Maybe I should have saved my money and got a Panasonic?

Can anyone explain this? I know some here have compared the D777 to Panasonics (Purk??).

hmmm... good to know.

i'm someone who thinks the difference between portables is a little overblown anyways. they're freaking portables. just background music you know?

but that could just be me.

You gotta remember that Tyll had heard those portable CD players directly from their headphone outs, with "Grato", er, Grado, SR-60 headphones fitted with the old "uncomfy" flat pads...

On the other hand, had Tyll listened to those players with the original headphones that came with those players (or even a pair of typical Sony V-CRAP 600's), he would have quickly learned that those 'phones would have made everything sound like hammered dog crap

That doesn't go into any detail at all though, what was the problem? lack of dynamics (or excess, from wherever your standpoint is).. volume.. bass boost?

I'll be one of the first to admit that the D777 isn't the best out there... but at least when I make these claims I back them up with my own opinions of the 'issues'

...maybe its just that i've never liked Panasonic equipment... their headphones suck, and their gear imo over-emphasises mid-bass (probably to compensate for their sucky headphones

And what's "308" anyway?!? Could it be a D-303 with a typo?

Hi,
I've found Panasonic SL-S700's headphone out to be better than the D-777 also. The sl-s700 sounds very similar but has more refinement. I love its ability to drive Grado SR-225, it was outstanding. I did a side by side comparison b/w the headphone out of the SL-S700 to the META42 w/ AD845 and I found the combo b/w the META42 and SR-225 too be too bright and too agressive. I currently have Panasonic SL-S651C (top 1996), and it also a good match with Grado SR-225. In line out department, D-777 has no problem outclassed any panasonic pcdp.

I think that the D-777 sounds like a SL-CT570 on steriods. Very similar warms sounding PCDP's. However, the 777 still is superior. I remember that the line out was better too. (I'll have to go home and check that)

Purk,

See your quote below. Do you still feel the same about "D-777 >> SL-SX500" in headphone out? You mention in current thread how the 651 is good with the 225s, but how about SX-500 headphone out vs. D-777? How would you describe the two (including anti-skip and bass boost sound quality)?

Interested because most consider the D-777 the best "truly portable player", but the headroom quote throws a wrench in the works. Wonder why they didn't like it over the Panasonic. Its hard to find comparisons with SX-500 (or 300).

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but this was one of my references when I first found headroom! Wondering if your opinion is still the same.

Thanks!

Quote from old thread:

"Line out:

Sony D-303 = D-515 = D-311 > D-555 > D-35 > D-E900 = Current top of the line Discmans = D-777 >>Pananasonic SL-SX500 = Panasonic SL-S651C

Headphone out:

Sony D-555 = D-35 > D-303 = D-515 = D-311 > D-777 = D-E905 >> Panasonic SX-500 = Panasonic SL-651C >> Current top of the line Discmans

My opinion is very subjective, so be advised."

Tmann,

My new comment is only valid on the Panasonic SL-S700, SL651C with grado SR-80, and SR-225. I didn't have any low impedance phone during that time. However, if your really want to know how my SL-S651C and D-777 w/ CD3K on the headphone out performance, let me know. The SX-500, SL-S700, SR-80, and SR-225 have been sold. I still have the SL-S651c, b/c it has wireless remote.

That's how I hear it through the head-out, too. Perhaps the 777 has more emphasis on the highs and lows and the 570 on the mids. Same results with hi and lo impedence cans.
