Im glad somebody mentioned trout mask replica by captain beefheart (albeit cryptically).
Sure, it sounds chaotic and awful (not sound quality wise, its produced by zappa) but then you realize its actually pretty good. Then you realize its REALLY good. Words cant really explain it, just go listen for yourself. Its not exactly "pleasant" but i guarantee you havent heard anything like it.
Bjork is great. There's always some underlying melody in her stuff that's fairly memorable -- not too difficult to like in my opinion. I'm not sure I'd consider any music I've heard 'weird'. ...I suppose Trout Mask and Scott Walker's two latest albums were pretty hard to get into at first, but I've really warmed up to them -- so much so that they now seem fairly 'musical' to my ears.
...Actually, scratch that. Metal Machine Music is ****ing weird.
I'm pretty sure this is mike's first release on John Zorn's Tzadik label. It's basically mike's voice, a microphone, and a 4 track tape recorder in hotel rooms all over the world. Instead of song titles each track is listed by location, hotel name, room number, and date recorded.
Check it out to see if Mike Patton violated a hotel room, using only his voice, in a town near you!
