I've owned the Kenwood H10GB7, Zune 80/120, iPod Touch 2G, Sony S706/ A808/829/639, Sansa Fuze, and now the Sony X1000. And I prefer the X1000 by quite a bit over the rest of them. It reminds me of the Kenwood but with a bigger soundstage, less hiss, and as much treble detail as the Kenwood, but not quite as brutally presented!

I did extensive research before I decided to go for Cowon S9. I have listened to sony nwz series and owned cowon d2 and I think they are both good DAP. I would go for either cowon/ sony , SQ wise.
Of course ipod is out of question in term of SQ.

Of course, i had both COWON and IPOD.

IPOD won.
COWON sounds so coloured, (coloursound?)

I do have ipod touch and nano 2nd gen and used to be ipod fans before I bought cowon d2 and later sony nwz-s738 and Cowon S9.
Listened to same song with ipod touch and cowon s9 over and over both unamped, always come to same conclusion, easy win for s9.
Ipod is okay, but it is just not there compare to cowon and sony, SQ wise.

cowon d2 is the best out of all the ones I tried, although the bass roll-off is really irritating me, the sound quality is very clean with great instrumental separation and definition. people who say the cowon d2 is cold and analytical probably listened to it with no eq options on.
