What's the main reasons for people to choose open-back headphone over the closed-back?

For me it's about spatial awareness:

- Not letting coworkers sneak up on you
- Being able to hear the doorbell when a delivery arrives
- Hearing crying baby

For me it is simply that they are much closer to listening to speakers.
In college, I enjoyed listening via a pair of Smaller Advent loudspeakers occasionally pointing at each other, about four feet apart, with the recliner between the loudspeakers … 🤪😯🙂.

I shared similar opinions. Being able to hear the surrounding sometimes seems to be a bonus for me. So that I don't have to take off my headphone or pause the music when I can see someone is trying to talk to me.

It's the better soundstage, localization and the absence of resonances (which a closed back almost always has). Also the bass response is much linearer for most of all open back headphones.
All my headphones are open......

According to my audiologist, open-back headphones are the least damaging to your hearing, all else (i.e. volume levels) being equal.
