I hear they are good for rock, but how is the soundstage and detail? Im looking for pretty versatile headphones, my hd595's sound "dull" on some recordings. Would they be in the same league as the dt880's or the senn hd600's in terms of overall sound quality?

I hope to buy them soon, I think it will be one of the best dynamic headphone ever (at least for my tastes).

ditto. I was set on the DT880 for the longest time (since a lot of the music I like is acoustic) but let's face it, if you want a single headphone that works for a broad range of music (my tastes are very diverse), the DT880 won't likely satisfy you. I think that's where the DT990 is going to accel, as a main headphone.

Well the '05 DT990 that you've named in your topic title is the new DT990. People (including Headroom) often confuse it with being '06, but if you look on Beyer's site there is no such thing. The DT990 Pro is probably what you're looking for.

the dt990 pro are excellent for the price you can get them currently. My P2AV2 is driving them ok (hoping for an upgrade) and they sound a bit bassy but this is coming again from the amp.
This is a great headphone for rock and I fully enjoyed it. Read the reviews on Amazon as they are accurate in my opinion.

Well, they'll need an amp to shine, and they'd nice bassy headphones especially if you do dvd watching with them. Some movies you can really tell they were probably using Beyers when they did the mixing.

But for all that, it's not a big soundstage kind of headphone, and it's a bit grainy on the top and the bass can overpower the mids a bit... but it's like headroom said, a nice standby. There's better out there though, and for one thing they're missing that Beyer love that the old 600ohm monsters and also this new version have.

That's digging way back into my sonic memory, so YMMV.

They are still today great headphones: I had the "home" version (equal to the pro), I wrote what I think here: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=137702
