What's a lanyard ring?

A lanyard is a string or thin rope, usually looped, that you hang something on. A lanyard ring is just the ring you use to feed the lanyard through. Think of it as a belt loop, but for a lanyard, not a belt.

The lanyard ring isn't a tool, it is a feature. You can put a split-ring on the leatherman's lanyard ring and put a lanyard or a small clip on it. I tend to just toss mine in a pocket, but most often I carry my Leatherman side-clip and clip it to my left pants pocket.

There's a company called SOG that makes a multi-tool that is very competitive with Leatherman. If you're in the market, you might want to check them out too.

They're great for cutting your own arm off too.

Well, apparently it was a generic pocket knife leatherman knockoff.
