I second this too. You can pay a bit more and try the Epos M5. Hi Fi Choice states that this this speaker works best closed to the wall so it might be an advantage if you need space. The ELS-3 needs a bit of distance or the mid bass gets a bit too much maybe like 15 inches. Alternately try the floorspeaker version 303 which has better bass extension then the ELS-3.

If you're buying bookshelf monitors, factor in the cost for a nice pr of stands.
My soliloquy's weigh 22lbs each, the stand weights approx 25lbs, fill the stand with sand and it gets up to the 75lb area.

You won't get the best out of your speakers if they're on your desk. I won't get into all the details like imaging (I'm sure somebody better informed can do that), but just the resonance from the desk will be a Bad Thing(tm).

As for suggestions, the Tannoy Mercury F 1s and 2s are a good choice, but I have no idea how much they cost in the US. Still, a shop that carries Dali sounds like a good choice to buy from, since you know you'll eventually want at least the Helicon 300s...

The Mission M31i are very compact and have reasonably decent bass for the size. My local reseller is clearing them out for $140 a pair, but I doubt you would fly all across the country for the deal...

THanks Jii for that short explanation, never knew the resonance of the desk would matter much. What about tower floor standing speakers then? wouldnt they have the worst resonance
