I need a cheap CD player with a digital optical output that I can leave playing on repeat to burn in a DAC. What models should I look for on Ebay or online? Can anyone suggest anything? I don't want to put the heavy usage on my best components.

Do you want toslink or digital coax out?... or both?

If you want toslink, Most of the super cheap DVD/decks don't have them (philips, sony...Best buy...etc). I was at BB yesterday and noticed anything under $80 has ONLY coax. Optical toslink enters the picture around the $90 mark.

PCDPs are the opposite... they have toslink optical if anything. Ive never seen one with a digital coax.

Best bang for the buck in a portable is a Sony D465. You can snag em on ebay for under $25. I like my panny SL-CT430, I believe its the Japan only version of the CT470, and adds optical output. Very similar to the CT570, except the ESP buffer is 10 seconds max and uncompressed.

I like my D335 as well. it also has an optical out.

Ditto the portable DVD player advice... Tyll uses various units to demo HR amps at meets.

Good Luck!

Don't forget some of the older Kenwood PCDP's. My Kenwood has an optical TOSLINK out. The Kenwood has a very warm detailed sound & I'm really appreciating it more with my Koss KSC75's. Kenwood produced a great product & if I could ever find another Kenowwd PCDP, I'd buy it in a minute

I actually bought that Magnavox DVD from Walmart--lots of jitter and it smelled like burning plastic when it was plugged in. I bought a friend a $50 Philips DVD player from Walmart which is a much much better machine. I don't know offhand if it has optical in addition to coaxial.
