I bet they are looking in people's backyards for marijuana crops or possibly a particular person is on the run. Believe it or not, the police have the right to fly over your backyard and take pictures as long as the equipment used is in general use (by the public) and what they are taking pictures of are in plain view (from a helicopter vantage point, of course

). You should know the police can use other types of equipment that is not in general use, but the information obtain most likely could not be used as evidence against the particular individual charged.
