What would you tell your friends?

I just told him to listen to the headphone after his reaction. Now he's like, if only I had the guts to waste $800 or more on a headphone setup.

I have several £150 coats...
It's quality and it's style just like a great headphone

my friends think i'm insane for spending 150 on headphones. =T i won't be telling them how much the next pair i'm getting is going to cost.

they just don't understand and think i'm crazy if i even bring up the topic if buying a dac or amp as they think it's more wasted money all for a headphone.

but i'll make them listen one day to w/e their favorite song is through setup and see what they have to say after that.

I enjoyed reading the posts in this one.

I only tell one or two friends about how much I've spent or will spend on what I have or want. I'm in the camp that it is a waste to bother explaining it to most people. I wouldn't understand why they spend so much on shoes, cars, purses or whatever. Everyone has there thing. I shake my head at what I see them spend money on, why expect them to be any different.
Look at how much people waste on lotteries. Or at Casinos. Ill never get that?

Sure, we should all be open minded and tolerant. Maybe we can learn from each other about the value of paying extra for different things. Reality though, most don't.

I remember in college I showed a friend a watch I bought for $500. He flipped out. Then he did something I really didnt like. He started telling every person we bumped into for the next week. He would say "hey, look at what he got!" and he would lift my sleeve and show them while laughing. Then say "he spent $500 on it!!!"...everyone snickers. Since then Ive bought a $3000 watch. Think I told him? Yeah right.

Problem is that sometimes people see your portable rig and wonder What you have. I just talk conservatively unless I see some genuine interest on their part.

Fortunately, all my close friends either have bought headphones as expensive as mine, are members of head-fi, or at least understand what good sound quality is. Only my sister remains unconverted, but I got her Senn earbuds at least :/

Haha, great thread.

When I bought my K240s in high school my friends, parents, and teachers all just laughed, saying they were the biggest headphones they had seen outside of a helicopter. I knew right away that there was no need to tell them how much they cost and if I didn't tell them then, I'm not about to tell them how much I have spent at this point!

most people have something they're willing to spend a lot of money on - whether it be audio equipment, photography, shoes, clothes, jewelry, cars, going to the movies, etc. i don't understand paying $12/ticket and buying $8 popcorn and $5 sodas...it's like buying $200 headphones, IMO. but who am i to judge how someone else spends his/her money?

I don't really see any need to divulge how much I pay for things - especially my toys - as it's really none of anyone's business (and I wouldn't expect anyone to care anyway). Most of my friends are pretty neutral about my hobbies, only really showing their curiosity if they want some opinions on their own upcoming purchases, or want to hear them for a while.

[EDIT] This is what Head-Fi is all about anyway, right? Having a group of likeminded people to chew the fat with and meet from time to time?

Seen 'The Departed' yet?

Anyways, one of my friends insists that Bose Triports are the best ever. Everytime we go to an electronics store he puts them on and then insists that I listen to them and then asks me "Now tell me aren't those the best sounding headphones ever?"

Everytime I end up saying "Yeah, they're ok"

Just waiting for december, will get a high end full size, ask him to listen to 'em and ask him the same question

....just hope he doesn't end up replying "Yeah, they're ok..."

all i can say is, if i can get them to not wear iBuds, i've done my job...

that being said, the only people i've told that i've bought a $300 pair of headphones were my former co-workers. they had a jaw-drop reaction at first and one went on saying to me, "it's better than using those earbuds that came with the iPod".

good enough for me!
