It was a Walkman cassette player. Can't find a picture from google, and I don't have it with me as of now... It was black/dark grey though. On a related note, it's crazy how much things have evolved since the cassette days that aren't that far away really. C-cassettes held what, 10-15 songs? And now my iPod holds 80gb's and my X7 holds 160gb's, and they're both smaller than the walkman. Jesus I feel old.

I can't remember what my first cassette player or CD player was, so I'll instead post my first DAP.

Rio Riot. Thing was really damn huge. Pretty much had to stuff it into my pocket, if it would even fit.

My first portable music player was also a Sony TPS-L2 that was given to me as a birthday gift in late 1979. That first portable music player broke decades ago and I remember throwing it away. About 4 years ago, I managed to purchase another TPS-L2 that is in excellent working condition (still working today) except for the headphones which the earpads disintegrated.

The first portable music player that I had purchased with my own money saved from working part time at a grocery store was the Sony WM-702. It was Sony's top of the line Walkman at that time and I had to really try and save my money so that I could purchase it. I bought the WM-702 in the summer of 1989 and rembered that it was the best sounding device I had owned up to that point. I still have this Walkman with its original box and all accessories and it still plays flawlessly today.

A Sony Cassette/AM/FM player, F1 model, from about 1982 or so.

Bought between 1982-84, theSanyo M4440.............this unit had amazing SQ.  It also had a microphone, xtra bass switch and you could also slow down/speed up recorded music with a small finger wheel.  I loved this thing.  It was white, and had a silver pleather cover that snapped on.

I'm fairly certain I had a Walkman of some sort when I was really young, since I remember copying my parents' Chumbawamba CD to tape so I could listen to it when I wanted to.  Alas, I can't remember what it was.  Does a Game Boy count?  It plays music, and I got one of the original ones...

I do remember my first CD player however:

The Sony DE301 ESP.  It had a true line out - if I had known what that meant now, I would've kept it!  I think I had a grand total of one or two CDs at the time...

Just like some other members here, I can't recall my first player. It was a CD-player, but I can't even recall if it was a Sony, Philips or Panasonic.
I went through 2 of them before getting my first MP3 player: the Creative Muvo with a whole 256MB of storage.

Does this count?

He had a tape player in his butt and he would move his mouth to tell you whatever story was on the tape.  I remember trying to feed him crackers as a kid.
From there I went on to some Sony cassette players(listening to recordings of my uncle's Christian quartet, a Christian Christmas rap tape, Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, and some random album by Alabama), then to a Sony DE 301 esp pictured above, then an archos jukebox, then various Ipods.

Early 1950's crystal radio with one ear plug shaped like a rocket and you pulled the tip up and down to get 1 or 3 different stations (wish I still had it) then early 1960's am/fm transistor hand hels radio with one ear phone......Jump to the 1st Sony cassette "Walkman" player....Thought I was KING crap..making all my cassetes on my Studer Revox Tape Deck.......Then last to The Sony D-5 CD player with cheapie headphones, but I used Senn.cans don't remember model and other High End Phones for that era 1980's    ....

How did you like my "Rocket Crystal Radio" not near as cool as your Big Bird...thanks duke
