What Up with Audio Cubes???

It turns out that Audio Cubes service was great--except for the fact that they did give me the wrong tracking #.

I placed the order on Tuesday 3/1. Four days later on Saturday 3/5 they were at my local post office here in New York. I didn't learn that until this morning when Audio Cubes emailed me the correct tracking #.

It took the USPS about as long to move the package 5 blocks to my apartment as it took Audio Cubes to get them from Osaka to New York.

Such is life in the global age. No wonder all our jobs are going overseas.

I'm just checking out the A500s as I write this.

Up until now my first and only headphones were Grado SR 60s with the original comfie pads. I've had them for 2+ years. I have Meadowlark Swift speakers, which I love--fabulous near-field sound stage in my small apartment. They replaced Paradigm Atoms about two years ago. I have a generic stereo receiver--HK 3370--which drives the speakers. I use the 1/4" jack on that for my headphones.

I recently replaced my old Stereo-Link USB sound card with a lan-modded Emu 0404 with his IC cables. That was a huge step into audophilia.

I listen mostly to bop-jazz/jazz vocals/blues/Afro-Cuban and less to classical--some Rock/R&B tossed in. All my tunes are now on my hard drive--backed up to another HDD. Most of my recently added collection are APE files. I still have some high bitrate MP3s. I've weeded out the inferior stuff.

I chose the A500s strictly on the basis of the reviews here. I wanted cans with a different sound signature from the Grado's. My budget was $150 max. At one point it was a choice between refurbed Senn HD 590s and the A500s. Then Amazon took the Senn's off sale--so the default was the A500s.

First blush reaction is that I surely got something different from the Grado's. There is a boomy bass and a weird sort of echo effect that will take some getting used to. Right off I miss the airiness of the Grado's. I feel a bit like I'm in a cave--a nice cave--but still a cave.

These are my first circmuaural phones--closed to boot. There is good detail. But I miss a certain lightness and clarity in the Grado sound.

I think I expected these things would be more comfortable out of the box than they are. The spring-loaded headband is a bit much. I feel like my head is in a vise. I'm sure that can be adjusted. I had to do that with the Grado's too.

Wow!!! I just switched from jazz to Afro-Cuban--Buena Vista Social Club. Killer. The percussion is out of this world. The vocals too. This I like.

Well--this is the fun of new toys. Play time...
