I have beyer DTS 770/80 and am wondering what to try next. I like them a lot but they are my first set of note worthy headphones so I have not developed a tase yet. I listen to everytype of music. I want to keep the budget under 300 maybe $400. I do not have a amp so keep that in mind, should I get an amp first?

yes! get an amp.. it makes a lot of difference. a lot.
when i first got my 880s, i didnt amp it. i pluged it straight into the source, and upped the volume.. didnt like the sound..

then i remembered that beyers are very hard to drive.. 250 ohms. threw in an amp.. and its.. wow. the soundstage changed significantly.. and i m addicted.

Certainly amp them!!... but only if you like them in the first place. Amping will not dramatically alter the sound signature, but it will fine tune it and really bring out the dynamic range. (IE the difference between quiet and loud) BUT thats assuming youre running them from a weak circuit at the moment. If your headphone out is capable already, its possible you may not notice much difference.
