I'm using the 590 with equinox cable and to me there was a noticable improvement over the stock cable. I'm using them with my ipod while at home and really enjoy the sound. I bounce betweent them and the er4p. To me the two kind of compliment each other.

Amping and cabling the 590s is a waste of money. Spend your money on source and music.

For $100, the EMU 0404 is your best bet. I have been very impressed by the sound outputted by this card since the moment I put it in. Since there's a good chance you'll upgrade later anyway if you get a lower card, you might as well go for something that'll last

. Edit: well just noticed you're looking for an external/laptop card. As far those go, you're more limited unfortunately. I'm not sure if there are any 'good' ones within that price range. You might have to settle for a Creative card.
