Some people say the 601s are better than the 701s.

Have not heard the 601s so I cannot comment.

I will have to try the K701 for gaming some time soon, before I have to return them to their owner. Tomorrow is my birthday, so I will probably be out a bit over the next couple of days, so little opportunity to game.

I got to appreciate the soundstage of the K701 in gaming, seemed to match the size of my monitor better.

@Mad Lust Envy, I'm thinking the K701 won't satisfy you for directional cues as much as the DT770. But we shall see. I'm also wondering, you are going to drive the K701 straight from your Mix Amp or are you going to use the Mix Amp as a preamp feeding into something bigger?

Please post your results with this experiment, I am very curious to hear how they do.

Happy birthday :D

I'd be interested to hear how the K701 handles gaming. The AD900 does great on the few times I've had time to actually game for like 10 minutes at a time these days

Thanks for the detailed comparison - I think I will go for the K701 (probably the K702, though - the detachable cable gives me a better sense of security, even though the K701 looks a lot better IMO!)

Can you compare the comfort of the two? As I said, the K240M's that I have aren't very comfortable, but that could be because of the pleather pads, and I don't think they use AKG's "3D Foam" pads.

The most commonly recommended phones to upgrade to from the AD700 are the K701 and the DT880. I have not heard the DT880 but I have an AD700 and a K701. The two share many similarities but I would say the K701 is a lot better.

A quick comparison from my experience, YMMV:

AD700 is more forward
AD700 has lusher sound. Mids aren't better actually, it's just that the K701 sounds so clean that the sound is "leaner" -- this is the same sound diff I heard comparing headphones through the Mustang and through the GoVibe Petite. The Mustang, which is so *clean* leaves a thinner, less lush sound compared to the Petite which adds a lot of lushness to the sound.
K701 has a much, much, MUCH larger soundstage. Almost unbelievable so. Hard to describe, you'll just know it when you hear it. This is the main upgrade the K701 has over the AD700, and IMO is the main unique strength of the K701 compared to all other dynamic headphones I've tried.
K701 goes down much lower and deeper in the low end. But only when using a good powered amp. Using the same good amp, a K701's low end is much better than the AD700's.
AD700 is a bit more sparkly in the highs. But overall sounds grainier than the K701

If this sounds good to you, and you're willing to burn in the K701 for a long time and willing to get a good amp for it, I'd say the K701 is a great upgrade. Mind you if you don't get a good amp for the K701, it will still sound great and can still match the AD700 easily. You'll still get the big soundstage for the most part; what you'll be missing out on is primarily the low end, and you may get sibilance or some harshness in the highs. But basically don't fret it too much if you don't have a really good amp. You can get the K701 now and use your uDAC just fine, then just get a beefier amp later on.

I chose the K701 over the K702 based solely on looks. There's an elegance to the K701 that the K702 just doesn't have.

As for comfort... Two potential issues.
1. Many people complain about the bumps on the headband. I never had an issue with them but some day they dig holes into their skull.
2. Clamp. They can potentially clamp quite strongly. The good thing about clamping... I haven't yet met a headphone I couldn't fix for clamp problems. The K701 was no exception.

I have never tried the K240 but I have the K271. I must say, AKG makes some of the most comfy headphones for my head. I love the self-adjusting strap. K271 was more comfy than the K701 clamp-wise but you can fix the K701 and it then becomes more comfy.

lol, this thread is piquing my interest, (or lack thereof) in K70x and K601.

I don't know about those looks - the K701 pics I've seen are a bit of an eye-sore versus the lovely dark scheme of K702.

To each his own. Some call the K701 toilets.

The white body with brown leather definitely has a vintage elegance to it, but I realize many people will prefer pure black.
