OK...

I've got a 15 month old HP Pavilion dv7 which comes with come kind of 'beats' EQ system, then there's the EQ system in iTunes and lastly, if you dig deep enough there are tone controls in the codec information boxes.

I've tried different things, turning iTunes EQ off and fiddling with the beats.
Then turning off beats and fiddling the iTunes EQ.
The codec controls don;t seem to do anything, weird.

I really just want one set of good quality controls and things get really weird if you leave both
EQ systems on, it seems that if I boost bass on iTunes, beats then further increases the already
increased bass signal!

Does anyone have any ideas on an EQ system that's worth downloading or ways of best
managing the systems already on board.

I'm happy to ditch iTunes if someone can suggest a good quality alternative. I'd like to
get my tunes redone in FLAC or some other lossless codec.

I intend listening with full size phones...just haven't bought them yet! I've got
a separate post for them.

Thanks in advance!
Mark

If you go to Control Panel --> Sound and Audio Devices can you control the sound from that panel?  Look especially under the Audio tab and look inside the Sound Playback drop down.  You should see the controlling audio device.
