With its built-in battery, the U2 is even smaller and lighter. I have the fun-sounding Creative EP 630's, and just for the record, the Cowons can power really good earphones or headphones should you decide to upgrade down the road.

Sounds like a great minimalist player for your needs. (Have you looked into the less-cool-looking AA-battery-powered iAudio G3, as well?)

Not yet but I have been looking at the irvier t10 because it uses an AA battery instead of something built in like the iaudio U2 (so it'll only last 3 yrs?). Plus the t10 is rated to last 45hrs

. Not sure if it's drag and drop like the U2 though.

Oh and I put functionality first.

I got the 1gb creative nano plus for $60 and it sounds nice and comes with a lot of stuff and you just need to turn off the backlight and there is no background noise. However, the volume control sorta sucks because you can't get it down low enough in my opinion (I got sensitive ears), but they sound nice with the ep630s.

I read the volume control was messed up in a new firmware they are using.

NM you can just set a custom EQ and turn everything down to solve the volume prob except for FM radio.
