I just whipped out my dad's vinyl collection and found our old JVC JL-A20 Turntable, and got it working.

I was wondering what kind of sound changes to expect from a new stylus or cartridge.

I have almost no clue about any of this stuff, so any help would be great, thanks!

what are the other components involved?

while this may not directly answer your question, the other components are important, but many argue "garbage in, garbage out".

not sure where i am going with this post

Depending on the age of the cartridge and the wear on the stylus, night and day. You can often get by with just replacing the stylus for your existing cartridge, which is generally easier than going through the process of installing and aligning a new cartridge.

If you know what you're looking for (I don't...) you can inspect the stylus with a magnifying glass. The general concensus seems to be "better safe than sorry".
