What is your history in headphones ?

Before Head-Fi:

Some cheap Sony cans --> Sony MDR CD280 --> MBQuart QP240 --> PX100

After joining Head-Fi:

HD595 --> HD650 --> DT531 --> HF1 --> SA5000 --> K701

And finally I'm left with 650 and SA5000 but the journey has just begun.

Registered on Head-Fi 10-26-2004 to research candidates to replace crappy iPod earbuds...

1) Sennheiser PX200 (returned, could not achieve seal=no bass response)
2) Koss PortaPro (returned, headband sucks the big one, it pulls hair)
3) Koss KSC/75 (sold here)
4) Sennheiser MX400 earbuds (still own, perfect for running on treadmill)
5) Alessandro Music Series One (returned)
6) Sennheiser HD 555 (returned)
7) Sennheiser HD 600 (still own, my primary home cans)
8) Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro (I liked these and regret trading them for #9)
9) Shure E4 (sold here, did not like, realized don't like using IEM's anyway)
10) Sennheiser HD 650 (sold here, not necessarily better than HD 600)
11) Koss KSC/35 (still own, my primary portables, best deal in cans period)
12) Sennheiser HD201 (still own, knockaround closed cans)
13) JVC FX-55 (somewhere in my room, don't care)
14) Grado HF-1 (sadly was sold here, liked sound, cannot wear them for long, ears hurt)

15) To be determined, hopefully

1997:
AIWA HP-X915.

2004 (first half):
Sennheiser HD-570. My first Sennheiser and open cans.

2004 (second half):
Grado SR-80. My first Grado and one that has garnered much praise on reviews. At the same time, I started Head-fi activities. Curse it!

2004 (last quarter):
Sennheiser HD-580. I became a Sennheiser fan and a little lighter in the wallet.

2005 (last quarter):
#1. Sennheiser HD-650. Left a ringing blow on my savings.
#2. Alessandro MS-2. On its way to me now. Yet another mark of a Head-fi curse.

p.s. Notes to oneself how spending has increased exponentially since joining Head-fi...

Loved my dad's old Pioneers in the early seventies, got my first decent headphones in 82'. They were Yamaha YH100's. I thought they were incredible back then. Bought my AKG K340's in 89' i believe. Got a short in the cable about 6 months ago. That's when i discovered Head-Fi and Headphile. Larry recabled and modded them, and now i'm a headphone junkie! Since that time i've had Ety ER4P/S and sold them, i've also bought some modded PortaPros, ATH EW9's and Senn. 650's with Cardas cables. Not to mention a Rega Ear, which i've sold, and a Dynalo.

Im an old timer and my first set of phones was in 1966 from radio Shack which was the only place in those days.It was a ugly looking Realistic beast that had a feature that if you wore it in reverse(Left cup on right ear)You got an amazing 3d effect that kept me going all through the music of the sixties.I abandoned phones after that and now in 2005 i just got a grado sr60 and it sounds pretty amazing with my creative zen xtra that is loaded with music from five generations.

Koss Pro4AA
Koss Pro4AAA
Koss Porta-Pro
Sennheiser 497
Grado SR60 (with bowls)
iRiver silver (SlimX 350) earbuds
Sennheiser MX400 earbuds
Grado SR225 (bowls)
AKG K240S
Sony EX71SL
Ety ER6
AKG K501
Ety ER4S
This was about when I made VWAP-modded Senn 414 pads for the SR225
Koss KSC75
Sennheiser HD580

The Koss Pro4AA/AAA were used until their (coiled) cables became unreliable, despite my best (non-EE) attempts to keep them going by holding the cable in place with materials like string and tape. Despite my throbbing ears with those heavy, vice-grip beasts, with the sources I was using back then, I coudn't live without their sound.
I gave the Porta-Pros to my son, who used them portably until he lost them somewhere. I then gave the SR60 to my son, who used them portably for over a year until the wiring in the "Y" came loose for one ear. Now he uses my Koss KSC75. My oldest daughter bought the HD497 from me when I got the SR60. She used them for awhile with a PCDP, now with an iPod. She uses them portably, and has gone through the original and three replaceable cables so far. I buy them for her in pairs now, so she has the second one to swap in while I put another pair on order. I recently gave the EX71SL to my youngest (teenage) daughter to use with her PCDP. She loves the sound from them.
The K240S I gave to a friend, along with a listening station carefully hand-assembled from a vintage PCDP (supported on pummice sponge to bring out lovely highs), a Magwires Original IC and an 18V Go-Vibe with AD823 installed (supported on Sorbothane to increase the depth and spaciousness of sound and fill out the lows to where they are beautiful) - truly low-cost, Hi-Fi sound. The K501 are currently on loan with an option to purchase - we'll see if they come back. I still have all of the rest. On an almost everyday basis, I use the ER4S, the SR225 and the HD580 - and am LOVING the sound that I get from each of them in their respective rigs.

The next phones on my future to-buy list are:
1) Beyerdynamic DT880
2) Grado RS-1 (WHEN am I going to be able to pull this much discretionary cash together at one time without a bill coming in to gobble it up? But I can't let this dream die - not given HOW MUCH I LOVE the sound of the SR225).

That's my story, "A Head-Fi Carol", including the Spirits of Headphones Past, Present and Future.
