May they rest in peace:
Koss Pro 4A - listened into the ground
Beyerdynamic DT831 - too bright
Etymotic ER-4S - thin and lifeless
Beyerdynamic DT770 - not bright enough
Ultrasone HFI-600 - tinny
Ultrsone HFI-650 - not used enough

Currently in the arsenal:
Beyerdynamic DT931 - good rockers
Sennheiser HD600 - getting even better
Pioneer 10R - for the rare closed phone event

In my sights:
Beyerdynamic DT880

And for me... You guys really don't want to know:

Lots of assorted crappy things, the highlight of which was some Koss model or another, at the time I thought they were great.

Then, several years ago, I went to Radio Shack and got some Optimus Nova 58's. The ones that take a AA battery and vibrate with bass. What a mistake. A waste of a perfectly good $50 too. Oh well, at the time I thought they were good. Historically, I've been more of a speaker person, though, on my miniscule pre-workforce budget, that has amounted to Klipsch PM 4.1 computer speakers. I modded them with some high grade (the best radio shack had anyway) speaker cable for the satalites and it made a nice difference. Now I've gone and bought a Terratec DMX 6-Fire and the combanation sounds earily good with some things and pretty plane with others.

I'm looking at phones and I can't make a choice. I need good cans but I can't afford to get good cans AND a reasonable amp, so I'm not sure what to do. I also can't spend a lot of money even though I'm finaly working becuase I need to have it for other things. Dental bills, car expences, contributing to the house... blah blah blah. Plus my poor car's days are numbered and when it gets on its last leg I want to hunt down a cheapo used Porsche.

Well that's my story for now. Who votes I should get a pair of V6/7506's and be done with it untill I have some real money to blow on audio equipment?

may I know which is your favourite can in all genres?

Sorry, I missed this question the first time around.

I don't really have one. Like many polygamists on this board, I often associate a system with the type of music I want to listen to, but also, like Hirsch (he's the only one that said it, AFAIK, though I'm sure there are others), it's also very situational dependent.

I live in the DT770Pro's at work. (I have to be more specific, now that a non-pro version is coming out. Though I will probably be getting those, too.) Sometimes, when I want to let my ears breathe, I wear the HD600's.

At home, lately, I've been kind of displaced. I've been going back and forth between the AT A100Ti and the AT W2002, both excellent phones. Those four are my favourites in all genres of music. Notice that three of them are sealed -- that's for a reason. At work, well, hopefully that is self-explanatory -- they eliminate distraction, both verbal and mechanical. At home, I have an air filter.

The DT770Pro's and the HD600's are high impedance, the two AT's are low impedance, so it mostly depends on the amp. I'm kind of a funny minimalist guy, so it also depends on the jack (for example, the A100Ti is naturally a 1/8" with a 1/4" adapter, so I use him on my Kenwood RD-VH7; the W2002 is naturally a 1/4", and I don't have a 1/4"->1/8" adapter handy, so I tend to use that one on my ASL Reference Tools and ASL UHC-Signature, both of which I've been playing with a lot lately [for two reasons: one, novelty, I just got them; two, ease, the easiest system for me to set up quickly was the MF A3^CR->ASL Reference Tools]).

Before Head-Fi:

Koss Pro-4A: All of my friends were convinced that this was as good as it would ever get.

AKG K240M: Very pleased with the huge upgrade from the Koss. I've had 'em for 20 years, and still love these cans...use them with my work rig now.

Ear Buds and so on

AFTER Head-Fi:

Grado SR225: Good cans for rowdier music, but a bit on the bright side.

AKG K501: Sweetest highs and mids I've heard yet.

AKG K340: Most recent addition. Very pleased.

My next purchase (which will not occur for awhile) will probably be the AKG K1000...if I can find a decent used pair.
