Ummm... most of the stuff I listen to (Deathrock) is independent...

If i had to choose one favorite band, i'd probabally go with either Gun Club or 45 Grave.

For Indie stuff I usually go to cdbaby.com and pastemusic.com
If I'm not mistaken, cdbaby launched jack johnson(at least that was the first place I heard of him). cdbaby will also search for mainstream bands and lead you to indie bands with similar sounds. They have a "if you like this: then try" feature.

With their 2001 release of Turn On The Bright Lights, an incredible guitar driven band with an ambiance unmatched in todays rock, they have carved a solid reputation among intelligent fans and critiques alike. Taking their roots from Joy Division et. al., they are a refreshing treat from the sludge of White-Rage/Nu-metal groups plaguing the waves.

Zanth, theres a neat review of Turn On The Bright Lights HERE

I have to agree with millerdog about cdbaby. I have picked up some great music there. I like The Grannies demented style of old fashioned hard rock. Hot Buttered Elvis can play some great metal music at times, but I don't think they have settled on a style yet. Stink bug for new metal growlings.
Another place to get free downloads is Amazon.com they have quite a few bands you never heard of.
For a favorite I would have to say..........The Grannies.

The Pixies!

Also, after the band broke up the head of the band, Frank Black started putting out solo albums. His first, which was recommended to me by another head-fier (whom I never got to thank), Teenager of the Year rivals the best stuff the Pxies put out IMO.

Would you guys consider Wilco indie rock?

Well, American Head Charge isn't very well known, but not really indy. I don't really know any indy bands, really. Thrice I suppose is Indy... they're sorta punk rock/metal and not on a big name label.

the more i listen to it, the more it stinks of commercialism to me. it's like wannabe-indie rock, in my opinion. this is the latest album by the way, i don't own any of their other stuff. decent cd though, just not as good as some of my other favorites.

I only brought up Wilco, because YHF. has so far been my favorite of the year, and they seem to have a lot of "indie cred", not that that means anything....

That's an interesting opinion, though. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is generally regarded as their most "experimental" - if that's the right word.

btw - Whoever mentioned The Microphones, I second the recommendation, their stuff makes particularly great headphone listening....

IYOW? that's what happens when I go poking into electrical circuits and get a nice fuzzy inside.
Indie I think came from independant label bands. I think now anything is indie if it can't be found on cdnow or in tower records.
It is becoming somewhat of an obsession for me, for I feel by purchasing "small" label bands, I am in a way promoting them. Instead of giving up my hard earned to the big companies, I get to help some bands just starting out.
The good thing is you find some gems. The bad thing is that you get some real, uh, not so good stuff.

by the way, I just got this cd by Devil Doll "Queen of Pain." 40's flame style female vocals with an attitude.
