DBXII is a compander (compression/expander) that was very popular with serious tape enthusiasts several years ago. As I recall, it offered up to 40db of noise suppression.

This particular model also functioned as a dynamic range enhancer. It worked by making low levels sounds lower and higher level sounds louder. IIRC, the changes were -2 to +7db respectively. A similar product was Phase Linear's Auto Correlator.

Believe it or not, both have been happily residing in my attic for years and years. Today, it has no practical value whatever.
