I'm going to agree with CDBacklash on this one. It sounds like the upper register of a piano to me, but slightly muted. I may be mistaken, but I believe I can hear a faint click of the hammer vibrating after impact as well, and the resonance of the chamber and other strings.

Then again, I played piano for a number of years too (though not at the conservatory level), so that may be just what I expect to hear.

Other ideas that crossed my mind were clinking horseshoes, or something like a hammer and an anvil (low mass striking higher mass). I rather like the idea of the spoon and teacup, too.
