What is the Saddest song ever written?

Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford"

A beautiful melody that is paying tribute to Clifford Brown, the brilliant trumpet player that died in a car accident at the age of 25.

Either "Limousine" by Brand New or "Gravedigger" by Dave Matthews.

Not the saddest one for me but agreed, it really pulls at that "growing up" awareness that we have...

My honourable mentions:

Elgar's Serenade for Strings in E Minor op.20

The Slave Girl's Plea in Puccini's Turandot

Never Never - The Assembly (that love that always happens to someone else)

3rd Runner up: Boston - A Man I'll Never Be

2nd Runner up: The Stones' No Expectations - from Beggar's Banquet (for a twist, listen after reading Great Expectations' original ending)

1st Runner up: Boys of Summer (the video actually adds to the song)- Don Henley

Probably the saddest song? The Carpenters' "Superstar" -Loneliness is such a sad affair,...- Unrequited love, nothing left but the yearning and an empty horizon...

"Shiny Happy People" by REM. How that song got the airplay it did was sad. Even more sad when I couldn't get away from the sound. It did however, make me realize that the drug problem in America is worse than originally thought.

x2. actually the whole "devil and god is raging inside me" album is probably the most depressing album i ever heard. most notably i will add "handcuffs" and the track "untitled" very creepy and touching recording. a lot of their stuff is pretty similar to radiohead in terms of their dark tone.

Hm .. maybe not the saddest songs ever, but things that spring to mind are:

Queen - Who wants to live forever
Queen - The show must go on

And something rather modern that I find very sad:

VNV Nation - Beloved

YouTube - shut up (and sleep with me) - sin with sebastian

Certainly a bizarre video. I realized right after I clicked it though, that that would have been a good opportunity to Rick Roll people, and even though it wasn't Rick Astley, I can't say that video was much less annoying

Very surprised nobody has mentioned:

All My Love - Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door

From the Wiki Page All My Love (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Quote:

Plant wrote the song as a tribute to his son, Karac, who died from a stomach infection in 1977 at the age of five. He did the vocals all in one take, and the song changes key on the last chorus.

Quoted for truth...

Maybe even "Self Conclusion" - The Spill Canvas
