What is the recommended loudness for listening without damaging my ears?

I've always like to listen to my music loud. But I'm concerned that my ears may be damaged.

80dB to 85dB on a 1000hz tone (then only crank it up for a few favorite tracks). Note that some recordings can have higher gain (or lower) than what you'd get out of an audiophile/car audio test disc tone or a tone generator.

I turn it up until I notice cranium fluid or blood seeping from my nose and ears, and then dial it back a bit.
