I know that a 40GB HD is actually about 37GB, but can all of that capacity be used? Both my 40Gb iPod and iRiver are at about 35GB, and I am wondering if this is the practically limit and I should buy a third DAP. Is it possible - and desirable - to fill a DAP to capacity or should some HD space be left unused and, if so, how much?
Depending on how fragmented the drives are, you should be able to get pretty darned close to 37 gig. It's probably wise to leave some space so you can record (aka iriver) or in case the device needs a little breathing room for some type of caching/swapping or whatever.
