hd-5000, it's the fluffy pillow for you! no one makes fun of the spanish inquistion!

unfortunately people won't pay to watch a bowel movement for 90 minutes.

then again, i could be wrong... [insert zinger here]

as to 2001, am i the only one who thought the three spaceships with their gas trails resembled spermoza?

i'm surprised no one said Star Wars (chapter 4, the original), Indiana Jones, and Ben Hur.

you have to admit that Psycho and Jaws had a profound effect on the American People.

Strangely, no mentions for...

Dr. Strangelove
Withnail and I
Taxi Driver
The Princess Bride
Cinema Paradiso
On the Waterfront
Goodfellas
The Rocky Horror Picture Show

But everyone knows the greatest movie of all time is Citizen Kane. And since the Godfather-hater is a Limp Bizkit fan I guess I don't have to say anything about that.

(Citizen Kane DVD edition is worth having. The bonus DVD is actually worth watching. Orson Welles himself was the real tragedy.)

the Princess Bride is not allowed on the list because of the forrest scene.

goodfellas? na, casino! but best movie of all time? then i submit: "Aliens": "they can bill me" & "game over man, game over". but there are many people who don't like science fiction as it is a purely american invention. Encounters of the third kind? Independence Day? THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL?

for best movie, it must have best screenwriting (dialogue), best cinematography, best direction, best editing, best sound, best costumes, best special effects, universal appeal across many segments of society and ages. on this basis 75% of the above list would fail.

"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", then? too bad they cut out 3 hours.

I think you're approaching it from a too technical angle. A movie shouldn't have to have the best of everything (direction, costumes, etc) to qualify as best. A great movie is one that you enjoy and that involves you and becomes part of our culture. Princess Bride surely has universal appeal. What was wrong with the forest scene, are you thinking crappy monsters? ROUS made it into Nethack, and maybe they weren't scary but neither was the holocaust cloak or the eels.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL belongs on the list, _maybe_ Close Encounters too, but Independence Day is pure Hollywood formula made to gross big money and nothing else, and it shows. I can still imagine crowds of skinheads with goatees in trailer parks going "woo!" when Will Smith punched the alien.

Theyre supposed to look like spermoza.

Anyone who cant at least RESPECT the first godfather movie is a jackass.

I think my favorite is Amadeus, mostly for the music.

LOL, aeberbach. I was going to say that I'd heard better things than Limp Bizkit and Creed coming out of my ass...

I just watched the Godfather last night for the first time, and I thought it was a great movie. I've heard Part II is even better? Can't wait to watch it.

"Once upon a time in America" IMO is better than both of them.
If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
(not the silly hacked 140 min US version but the proper 226 min NR Italian version (english audio) )

Also, the people that think that Godfather is the best movie ought to be shot. I've seen better stuff come out of my ass.

Thanks for the constructive criticism.

My vote goes for Dr. Strangelove.

Sadly, so many movies are ruined today because somebody goes "oooh, look what we can do with a computer!" instead of bothering with a plot. Either that or they say "oh, lets spend a bunch of money to have (insert name) be naked, that will automatically make it a good movie. I don't know about everone else but if I was a director I'd rather have people think about my movies, not jack-off to them.

Oh well, that's an extra $7.25 I can put toward music for every movie I don't go see. Oh, wait, forgot a small drink and popcorn: that's an extra $20 I can put toward music for every movie I don't see.

Give me a "classic" any day, even (especially) if it is MST3K.
