What is the difference btw. 1 Bit DAC and a 24 Bit DAC in CD players?

My CD player has a 1 Bit DAC, how would this compare to the 20 Bit DAC found on some of the higher end Redbook CD players? Is it all about resolution, detail, that sort of thing? I'm curious about what I'm missing out on.

the 1 bit is an algorithm that converts the 16 bit PCM audio at 44.1 kHz to 1 bit signal at a much higher rate. the reason is to use a cheaper DAC, or a better one at the same price.
the 20-bit DACs found in the higher end players do not utilize this algorithm, but use better (most of them) DACs.
